Italy makes history with a third successive Davis Cup win
Italy has built a new November tradition: winning the Davis Cup. For the third straight year, the Azzurri have carved their names into the competition’s history, adding another title in Bologna after previous triumphs—including their 2025 final win over Spain.
Their achievement is remarkable. No nation had won three consecutive Davis Cups since the United States’ five-title streak from 1968 to 1972. And Italy did it this season without their two top-ranked stars, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
Instead, Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli stepped up brilliantly. Both went undefeated in singles, with Berrettini not losing a set all week. Their commanding performances meant the deciding doubles wasn’t even required, leaving Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on the sidelines. The celebration that followed was pure delight for the team and fans alike.
Italian team captain Filippo Volandri was visibly emotional as he spoke to reporters. “It’s an amazing feeling. Lorenzo (Sonego) taught me to say ‘amazing’—and ‘unbelievable’ too. This truly is an incredible sensation. Yes, we’ve won three Davis Cups, but this one is completely different because it happened in front of our home crowd, in our own country. I didn’t cry for the first two, but I cried for this one because it means so much to me. I just have to thank these guys. They were unbelievable—their effort, their commitment. This trophy is incredible. I’m so proud. We should all be proud of these players.”
Italy will now look to extend their streak next year, already qualified for the Final 8, which will again take place in Bologna.
